Rain did not hold
anything back at Budds Creek on
Saturday, and the skies cleared by
early-afternoon at the IHRA Summit
Racing Equipment Pro-Am Tour’s
Division 1 Double-Header race at
Maryland Int’l Raceway.
There were some shockers early that
will be sure to cause a shakeup in
the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment
Pro-Am Tour point standings. Michael
Beard from North Carolina went down
and out early to local driver
Michael Bolton.
Florida’s Jim Carlton raced
Virginia’s Mike Harvey early on, but
Harvey went on to win with a 7.51 as
Carlton raced well under his dial
with a 6.84. John Taylor, from
Naples, Florida, red lighted in
round three of Top Dragster,
knocking himself out of competition
in Budds Creek.
Bill Hawk provided a moment when, on
the green light, his Black Ford
Shelby nearly took out the tree.
Nothing happened, but Hawk fell out
of competition.
Local driver Jimmy Jones, from
Waldorf, made it to the IHRA Top
Dragster final round against veteran
Donny Urban; but fell short when
Urban, with a 7.142, scored the
overall win in Top Sportsman.
Jim Harrington, “the Teacher” who
owns his own racing school, looked
well on his way to victory until the
final round when he raced against
Bryan Worner in Super Stock Finals.
Worner won, in a close race, with a
10.174.
Other notable races included Bernard
Weaver’s victory, in the 1984 Dodge
Daytona, in Super Rod against local
driver Ray Koncen, from
Mechanicsville. Jeff Gardiner, from
Waldorf, scored a win against
Russell Linke in the Stock final
with a 10.943.
The final race in Saturday’s Pro-Am
Tour was a classic battle of Ford
vs. Chevy. Tony Morell in the
Thunderbird beat Glenn Butcher in
the Chevy Camaro in Top Sportsman;
closing out day one of the Double
Header weekend.
Day two featured a lot of great
side-by-side action and racing.
Anthony Bertozzi was dominant again,
as he won in Super Stock against
Bryon Worner.
In the Hot Rod finals, it was the
Glenn and Glenn show, as Glenn
Ferguson beat Glen Grimstead,
essentially by reaction time, to
win.
Mike Koontz wins in Top Sportsman
closer to his 7.32 on a 7.368 to
score the win against his opponent.
Steve Furr, who has dominated much
of the weekend’s races, went up
against David Elrod. Furr ran down
Elrod in a fantastic, side-by-side
finish. Steve Furr also won in Super
Rod competition beating out Calvin
Butler.
Great racing all weekend long
presented a fantastic show for the
fans that came out despite the
weather; proving once again that the
fans are the best in the sport.
